Dental Bridges

Several consecutive missing teeth can affect the function of your bite.  A dental bridge can restore that function, allowing you to eat and speak properly once more.  Dr. Patrick Tanner in Ogden, UT, can help craft a custom bridge to give you a beautiful and functional smile.

What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge helps fill in the gap caused by one or more missing teeth. The bridge attaches to two abutment teeth, which will be given crowns, or to two dental implants with crown restorations. The artificial tooth or teeth that fill in the gap are called pontics.

A Closer Look at Dental Bridges

With a traditional bridge, the abutment teeth, also known as anchoring teeth, are reshaped by your dentist to allow the bridge to fit properly. This durable restoration is crafted to match your natural teeth.
"We care about our patients and we listen to what they need to help them be healthier, happier, and enjoying their smile." Dr. Tanner

Implants Create a Strong Foundation for Your Dental Bridge

Tradtional bridge vs. implant-supported bridge
Dental implants function as artificial tooth roots, offering a stable foundation for your restoration. They can also last a lifetime, as long as you care for them diligently. As you can see, they remain securely fused to your jawbone, allowing the pontic and crowns to remain in place for years to come.

Implant-Supported Bridges

Dental implants provide amazing jawbone health benefits. When you are missing a tooth, the jawbone loses the stimulation the tooth root once provided and begins to deteriorate. Implants return that stimulation, stopping and preventing bone atrophy.

For dental bridges, implants paired with dental crowns act as the anchoring tooth for the pontic. This is often a great option for patients with more than one missing tooth. However, if you have several missing teeth, traditional or implant-supported dentures may be a better option. Our South Ogden dental practice offers a range of restorative dentistry options such as dentures to fit your unique dental needs.

What Might My Dental Bridge Treatment Look Like?

Dental bridges blend in easily with your natural teeth to improve your confidence and functionality. Your placement timeline may include steps like:
Sedation options like oral conscious sedation are available for more comfortable appointments.

Initial Consultation

During your initial consultation at our South Ogden office, Dr. Tanner will examine your mouth to determine if a dental bridge is right for you. Our dentist will also explain your options, as well as how your treatment plan may work. Even if you're not eligible for dental bridges, you may still be a candidate for crowns or dentures.

Dental Implants

If you need dental implants for an implant-supported bridge, our dentist will refer you to our trusted local surgeons for implant placement. Your dental implants will need several months to heal and fuse to the bone. This process is called osseointegration, and it's crucial for the stability of your implants.

Tooth Prep

For traditional bridges, your anchoring abutment teeth will be prepped for crowns. Our bridges use biomimetic crowns that preserve as much of the tooth structure as possible.

Impressions

Your dentist will take impressions of your mouth. At our South Ogden dental practice, we use both traditional and digital impressions. These are sent to the lab where they will craft your custom bridge. Often a temporary bridge is placed while you wait for your permanent bridge to be crafted.

Bridge Placement

After about 10 working days, your custom dental bridge will arrive at our dental practice. You will have an appointment where your dentist will make sure your crowns and pontics look natural before permanently bonding the bridge to your teeth or securing it to your implants.
